The Neurological and Humanistic Perspective on Behavior

The passage discusses the functions of behavior through four main ideas.  The first idea is that psychology studies the functions of behavior to understand why people behave the way they do. There are different theories that attempt to explain the root cause of human behavior. Some behaviors are inborn and are unique to an individual. On the other hand, there are behaviors that are a consequence of the individual’s external environment; this is the second idea contained in the passage. The external environment provides universal principles that guide human behavior that people strive to live by. Therefore, the passage lists two sources of human behavior; the individual traits which one is born with, and the environment in which one lives.
