Professional Boundaries in Nursing

Once patients enter the healthcare system, they anticipate respect and professional treatment from healthcare providers. They expect nurses to provide them with care that addresses their health needs adequately regardless of their backgrounds. Therefore, healthcare providers must place their client’s interests before their own.
Professional boundaries help create a positive provider-patient relationship and establish a safe environment for all parties including families, patients and colleagues. These boundaries eradicate tension and anxiety caused by the power difference between providers and patients. They also set the ground for evidence-care delivery at all contact points and support care providers in creating a therapeutic environment entrenched in respect and empathy.
