Poetry Analysis: I Hear America Singing

“I Hear America Singing” is a poem that depicts an idealized version of the American workforce. The setting of the story is various places across the whole of the United States ; from the city, to the country to the sea and to the shores. It shows the working class singing ‘carols’ happily as they diligently go about their duties.  It presents the United States as a place where people work hard and take pride in it. The writer says that he hears America singing because the songs of these people as they work hard in their duties collectively form the sound of America. It is apparent that the poem is a celebration of the United States as a nation where people find joy in doing honest, satisfying and meaningful work. It is also a nation where diversity and individuality are embraced.
