Selective advantage for heterozygotes in protection against severe malaria as a consequence of the similar geographical distribution of different haemoglobinopathies. The paper also describes in detail the three different types of haemoglobinopathy, in addition to outlining how combinations of haemoglobinopathies may have a negative epistatic effect in protection against severe malaria.
