Using Literature Teaching Resources to Make Learning Fun

Without a doubt, Literature teaching resources are a must-have. They help develop critical thinking skills, enhance comprehension and vocabulary, and allow readers to explore different cultures and worlds. 

When taught effectively, literature can be an engaging and enjoyable way for students to learn. It can quickly turn sour when your students do not find it interesting and engaging. 

Teaching Literature can prove difficult without the right resources. A great lesson plan should include activities and resources to make the class interesting and fulfilling.

1. Encourage student-led discussions.

Ask questions that prompt students to think critically about the text, but don’t give them the answer. For example, after reading a short story, you might ask “What do you think the protagonist was feeling at various points in the story?” or “What do you think the theme of the story is?” 

Student discussion questions are most likely around their interests and curiosities. That way, you will realize how they interact with the text. Allow your students to add their thoughts and express them to other class members.

For example, after reading a poem about nature, students could create a collage depicting their own interpretation of the poem. Games are a fun way to review vocabulary and key concepts learned from a text. They can also be used as an icebreaker before starting a class discussion. Some games that can be played with literature texts include charades, Jeopardy, and Word Ladder.

Games are a good way to draw in everyone to participate. Ensure that you encourage competition and reward winners. 

4. Act out scenes from the text.

This is a great way to bring literature to life for students. After reading or listening to a scene from a play or novel, have students reenact it using their own words. Instead of focusing on discussion questions, they can create mini plays that try and align with the books read in class. That would make literature unit the most fun class in school.

Most students zone out during reading sessions. Acting out scenes can capture their attention. It is also easier for them to remember scenes that were acted out in class. 

5. Use technology

Technology can be used in many different ways to engage students with literature. For example, create a classroom blog where students can post book reviews or short stories inspired by the literature they are reading. You could also use a classroom chat room to hold live discussions about the current book everyone is reading. Use emails to send out tasks and even send short stories that you wish your learners to explore.

6. Make connections to real life.

Students often find it difficult to see how literature applies to their own lives. Help them make those connections by relating the characters’ experiences to current events or personal issues they may be facing.

The simplest way to make anything count is to show a relation between what characters experience and our real lives. That way, we can feel their pain, anger, frustration, joy and happiness in each scene. We can also understand their actions. 

7. Encourage creative writing.

A great way to get students thinking critically about a literature text is to have them write their own stories, poems, or essays inspired by it. This can be done individually, in small groups, or as a whole class. 

Your learners also have plenty of stories they would like to share. Give tasks where they can write creative stories on their own. You can generate prompts from the novels. They can write a different scene to follow some even in the novel. That helps your learners stay imaginative and take an interest in the story. 

8. Have students create a multimedia project

Students can use PowerPoint, Prezi, or another program to create a multimedia presentation about the literature they are studying. This could include character analysis, plot summary, theme development, and more.

9. Encourage students to teach each other

Students can take turns teaching each other about the literature they are studying. This is a great way for them to review what they’ve learned and solidify their understanding of the material.

10. Host a literature festival.

This can be done in class or as an extracurricular activity. Students can create booths where they share information about their favorite authors, books, poems, etc. with their classmates. They can swap notes and discuss various literary theories, they have learned in class.
